Description of Service

Uturn logoUturn is a specialist service that provides support, help and guidance to young people and their families in Swindon who have alcohol or drug-related problems. The definition of alcohol and drugs covers all illicit substances, solvents and prescribed medication but excludes the use of tobacco.

The Service, which has close working relationships with a variety of partners (such as statutory children’s services and voluntary groups) is targeted at 10 to18 year-olds. It accepts referrals from all professionals and also encourages referrals from young people and their parents or carers.

Crucially, the service:

  • Work with young people to help them reduce the harm caused by alcohol and drug misuse and to improve their health.
  • Can see young people in the places where they feel comfortable.
  • Is always keen to find new ways of working in response to needs identified by partners or young people.
  • Works closely with carers and parents of young people to help them understand issues around alcohol and substance misuse.

Information Sharing and Confidentiality

In order to work effectively with young people, most of Uturn's services are confidential. However, in line with the principles of the of the Every Child Matters agenda, Uturn will share information with relevant agencies if there is reason to believe the young person is at risk of serious harm. Before doing so however, this approach will always be discussed with the young person and Uturn's confidentiality policy will be explained (usually at the first meeting with the young person).
